About Freemasonry
Discovering the principles and values of the Craft
What is Freemasonry?
Freemasonry is one of the world's oldest secular fraternal societies. It is a society of men concerned with moral and spiritual values. Its members are taught its principles through a series of ritual dramas which follow ancient forms, and use stonemasons' customs and tools as allegorical guides.
The essential qualification for membership is a belief in a Supreme Being. Freemasonry is open to men of all faiths who are of good character. It expects high standards of behaviour and aims to make good men better through participation in its ceremonies and charitable activities.
Freemasonry is not a religion, nor is it a substitute for religion. It requires of its members a belief in a Supreme Being, but provides no system of faith of its own. Its rituals are best described as morality plays which teach moral and ethical lessons through allegory and symbolism.
How we help in the community
Freemasons are encouraged to participate in charitable activities both individually and collectively. Charitable giving is one of the fundamental principles of Freemasonry, and lodges regularly support local and national charities.
In Hertfordshire, Freemasons support numerous local causes including hospices, air ambulances, youth organizations, and community projects. Our lodge particularly focuses on supporting local educational initiatives and elderly care facilities in the Hertford area.
Beyond financial support, many of our members volunteer their time and expertise to help various community organizations. Whether it's mentoring young people, helping at food banks, or supporting local events, Freemasons are active in making a positive difference in their communities.
How to become a member
To become a Freemason, you must be a man of at least 21 years of age (18 for University Lodges), of good character, and believe in a Supreme Being. You should have a genuine desire to participate in the principles of Freemasonry: Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth.
The process begins with an informal meeting with members of the lodge to get to know each other. If both parties wish to proceed, you'll complete an application form and meet with a small committee of members who will answer any questions you may have.
Following a successful ballot by the lodge members, you'll be invited to join. The journey through Freemasonry begins with three degree ceremonies, each teaching important moral lessons through allegory and symbolism.
